I'm putting an external URL in the web site link box, ticking "make public", and clicking "Submit". But when I refresh the page, the URL is gone, and the review doesn't seem to have registered anywhere.

I think you might need to put some text in the box. You can prompt readers to follow the URL.

For future reference:

When posting links to reviews located offsite, rather than just saying "click link to read review",

(From Administrator Dave)
"We prefer to have an extract for the offsite reviews so that our members can get a taste before they click away from our site. If we didn't require the extracts we would end up with a ton of bald links that are not very compelling for our members."

Cheers, thanks for your help Dave and Rhonda!
