Synopsis
Colonists on a newly opened world wonder why there are these perfect little cities and "velvet fields" that were abandoned by an unknown race -- until they find out.
This story originally appeared in Worlds of If, November-December 1973 and was reprinted in Lightspeed, April 2011. The story can also be found in the anthology Lightspeed: Year One (2011), edited by John Joseph Adams. It is included in the collection The Girl Who Heard Dragons (1994).
