Another time-warped astronaut crashlands on the ape world. Like his predecessor he is captured, befriended by the sympathetic chimpanzee Zira, and meets the girl savage. But when he escapes with her Underground and discovers the remains of New York City, he finds a race of deformed, telepathic Mutants who worship a nuclear Doomsday Bomb. He meets the astronaut hero from the perivious book, now half-crazed and venomous, who ultimately detonates the bomb and brings about a Holocaust, wiping out apes, mutants and humans alike.

It was a quiet, peaceful city.

It was a city unaware of an angry band of vicious gorillas anxious to revolt and an insane cadre of mutated humans hungry to kill.

Three of the apes escaped the destruction of the world by using a time travel device. They go back to before the world exploded, back to the human controled world. They land in the Pacific Ocean and are taken to the nearest Zoo, in Los Angeles, where they immediately become the centre of a violent controversy which results in their deaths. This happens after they inadvertently let their keepers know they can talk, but not before the female has given birth to a baby ape -- in hiding, since the American government wants to abort the ape child.

Caesar, the ape born in Escape from the Planet of the Apes, is being kept in a circus but comes to resent the human exploitation of apes so much that, with the help of a sympathetic and all too symbolic black man, he incites his fellow primates to revolt. The apes are victorious over the humans after a bloody battle, thus laying the groundwork for the future situation found in The Planet of the Apes.
