Synopsis
Three thousand years after Earth's colonization of the planet Borthan, stories of self-serving hypocrisy that occurred among the first arrivals have bred a culture that forbids emotional sharing and denies the naturally human concept of 'self.' Kinnall Darival breaks the strict code of the Covenant to record the sordid details of his rebellious life from the days of his royal youth to self-appointed prophet of love.

- A Time of Changes by Robert Silverberg
By that criteria, Robert Silverberg's A Time of Changes is a great story. I can't say I agree with the message of the book, which struck me as a troubling tale of how self-repression can be replaced with self-annihilation, ... - 1971 Nebula - A TIME OF CHANGES by Robert Silverberg
Creating a richly detailed alien culture seems to have become a favorite game for science fiction writers. Following in the footsteps of LeGuin and Delany, Silverberg spends most of A Time of Changes elaborating on the culture of the ... - Visions of Paradise: Best Writer of the Decade, part 2
My favorite writer of the 1970s was Robert Silverberg whose sense of storytelling, and tales of self-discovery were at their peak from 1966 through 1975, a period during which he wrote a seemingly endless stream of thoughtful science fiction such as “Hawksbill Station,” “Nightwings,” Dying Inside, A Time of Changes and so many more. I was disappointed in science fiction in the 1980s since it was the beginning of nearly 20 years in which sf mostly ignored the far-future ... - This Day, January 15, In Jewish History

A Time of Changes feels like a story from its decade. The medievalish setting on a distant planet has since dropped out of style and now seems dated and quaint. The extended descriptions of geography and politics, full of made-up names ... - Hugo Award Nominees for Best Novel: A Challenge

i hadn't heard of this book before, but it was in my "great science fiction" compendium along with 2001: a space odyssey, the day of the triffids and i, robot. it didn't really compare to any of them. on the plus side, it was very well ... - Visions of Paradise: Phases of the Moon
In my collection I have 48 sf books written by Robert Silverberg, and another 36 sf books edited (or co-edited) by him. That seems like a lot, but in some ways it barely scratches the surface of his career output. .... Consider Thorns, The Masks of Time, Nightwings, A Time of Changes, The Book of Skulls, Dying Inside. It is not surprising how much I have enjoyed reading such deliberate world and character studies over the years, and why my favorite authors other than ... - a time of changes by robert silverberg, 1971
