History
Penguin Books was founded in the U.K. by Allen Lane in 1935. Mr. Lane's goal was to make quality literature available at affordable prices, and the first Penguin paperbacks, from such authors as Agatha Christie and Ernest Hemingway, cost just sixpence. One of the company's first headquarters was in the crypt of the Holy Trinity Church in London. As the Second World War drew near, one of the company's bestsellers was "What Hitler Wants," and later in the 40's "Aircraft Recognition". Throughout the decades, Penguin publishing was at the cutting edge of controversey, with "Lady Chatterley's Lover" in the 60's, and "The Satanic Verses" in the 80's. Penguin is now an imprint of The Berkeley Publishing Group. Penguin continues to new and innovative works today, and to Sci Fi/ Fantasy especially, most prominently through its imprint ACE Science Fiction & Fantasy.
